Scales are the bedrock of good technique on any instrument. The ones presented below, practiced diligently and thoroughly, will prepare any trombone student for any piece in most middle and high school level selections. They are ordered roughly according to how I’ve seen scales presented in most band programs I’ve experienced.
For students with a well-developed range, but a straight horn, 2-octave major scales are below.
For students with a trigger trombone, these scales are for you. Go slowly as you descend into the basement of your horn, it’s more important to develop great tone down there than great speed.
A short warmup routine to get your sound going.
